It's 1:00 am Tuesday morning. Why am I up at this hour on a weekday night you may ask? Well, the Sundance Film Fest is in town and I just returned from a "film." It was the world premire of Summer Rain, Antonio Banderas' directorial debut. In classic Sundance style Antonio was there to present his work with his followers and fans; things ran long into the night. It was a fine "film" if not a little dark (what Sundance film isn't), but hey....I'm not a film critic, I'm a ski patroller.
Traditionally this is a great time of year to visit our town and the resort; the snow's always good (a little thin this season, but still good), the weather is gorgeous, and while the Sundancers fill all the hotels, condos, and lodges, they tend not to ski. This means that if you make the trip up here, the Mountain is generally pretty quiet. The locals have of course figured this out over the years. Folks I haven't seen on the Mountain since long before the holidays have returned to get out and re-discover why they moved here.
Times are changing though. It seems the last couple seasons the Sundancers have started to pack their skis and boards along with all that black-colored outerwear. They too have begun to realize that the Mountain is quiet, the snow good, and that it's nice to get out of those dark screening rooms for a few hours and into the sun on a lovely cold January day. We all enjoy this time of year; It's a chance to spend some quality time in the mountains, see some wonderful if not obscure independant films, hob-nob with a few celebs, and perhaps even share a pint at the bar with Bob Redford himself and take the chance to thank him for bringing his annual celebration to our fine town.
