One of my favorite things about working at a mountain resort is being surrounded by people who care about the outdoors and part of a team that respects and preserves the beautiful surroundings that we not only work in, but enjoy spending our free time in as well.
So it's gratifying that the Ski Area Citizens Coalition has named Park City Mountain Resort the West's Most Sustainable resort for 2013 in its annual Environmental Scorecard - giving PCMR an "A" grade and the top overall score of 93 out of 100.
The Scorecard cites a wide variety of criteria for our #1 ranking, including, but not limited to: or use of energy efficient fixtures in on-mountain facilities, the Resort’s purchasing of wind power to offset 100% of its electrical consumption, or support and promotion of public transportation for our team members and an overall reduction of the Resort’s carbon footprint by more than 50%.
You can see our commitment to sustainable practices all over the mountain, from the more efficient and environmentally responsible snowmaking equipment we invest in; to our Ecozone and Environmental Kiosk, devoted to educating guests about what we do to reduce our carbon footprint here, and how they can do the same at home; to a cutting edge snowcat fueled by Compressed Natural Gas - the only such grooming machine in North America. But that's just the beginning.
The new snowguns in the Neffland terrain park reduce the Resort's carbon dioxide emissions by 200 tons - that's like taking 36 cars off the freeway for a year.
This snowcat runs on Compressed Natural Gas: a more ecofriendly alternative to diesel fuel. It's one of only three such machines in the world.
Our Environmental Kiosk at the top of Silverlode Lift shows guests what we're doing to reduce our carbon footprint, while sharing tips for how guests can do the same at home.
Stay tuned as we continue to find new ways to operate in as environmentally friendly a manner as possible, and to help teach our guests about how they can do the same. It's our privilege to share this great mountain with you, and we want to keep doing it for a very long time.
