Park City Mountain Resort is home to countless historic mining buildings that we ski or ride past daily. Many of you may not know that you can take a FREE, guided, historic mountain tour and learn the history behind these fascinating structures. Whether you are a Park City local or just visiting, you will be treated to a wealth of knowledge as well as fun stories of how the runs got their names, and behind the scenes info from the 2002 Olympics. This tour is offered daily, just meet at the Eagle Statue in the Resort Plaza at 10 a.m. or at the Summit Demo Center at 1:30 p.m.  

Each tour is guided by one of our Mountain Hosts in the bright blue jackets. A majority of our mountain hosts have been working at the resort for ten plus years and are sure to entertain you with story after story as you ride the chairlift. If you've never struck up a conversation with one of our guides, you are missing out on some great tales.

I don't want to give everything away, but I thought I would share a few of the facts I found intriguing.

• 450 million dollars in silver was mined at Park City Mountain Resort back in the day.
• There are 1200 miles of mine tunnels.
• Skiers originally traveled underground through a mine shaft to a hoist (pictured below) where they were raised 1400 feet up to reach the mountain.
• Park City's Silver mines made over 25 millionaires.
• It took 7 snow cats to move Mid-Mountain lodge from its original home to its current location.

The historical tour will take approximately two hours and you will travel around the entire mountain. Don't worry, the tour stays on blue runs, unless your entire group decides otherwise. The best part about these tours is that they are flexible and your mountain host is likely to cater the tour towards any requests you may have.

While on the chairlift with your mountain host, be sure to inquire about tall tales and mining myths alike. While not all true, these stories prove to be entertaining.
