Stepping It Up for Race Season

The IPC (International Paralympic Committee) launched the para-snowboard competition season in Landgraaf, Netherlands last week; a Europa Cup, followed by a World Cup.

I’ll be honest, I struggled on the course and placed 6th in the Europa Cup. I’ve been competing for nearly a decade, but each year our sport progresses to a new level. There is a strategy behind racing and it doesn’t always mean being on the podium. The best riders don't always win. I went to the Netherlands to measure my abilities and set goals that will allow me to become a better athlete. In the World Cup race I mentally recovered by holding back and racing at a speed I was comfortable with.

That same day I received news that a dear friend and track athlete had set a World Record. Although I didn't know it at the time, she came in dead last in all of her events at the London Paralympics. Going into nationals, no one expected her to make the World Championship team.

She spent the summer focusing on training and mental preparation. Even though she wasn’t the “field favorite” she believed in herself. "When you outwork everyone else and your hunger and desire is greater that your competition you will see great results." – Scout Bassett.

For the season opener, I took 4th place in a field dominated by below-knee amputees. I'm proud of what I achieved in Landgraaf and I’m excited to step it up.
