Jen's Trip Diary: Day 1
Day 1: December 18th, 2010
Yep, I yelled at my kids on the mountain, not my proudest moment.
We decided to get out on the mountain today. The conditions turned from not great to down right messy. Our faces were freezing, our clothing was soaked and our attitudes were awful!
I must say a day like this makes me glad I live here so that we can choose our ski days.
The minute we arrived at the Payday lift, my 5-year-old, Declan, asked “Is it time for lunch?” It was 10:30 a.m. and we hadn’t even had one run yet! The snow was sticky. The visibility was terrible, from flat light to goggles-covered-with-really-wet-snow.
Skiing in a group of 6, my family of 5 plus a friend brought it’s own challenges. In these conditions, Declan held us back. He had trouble getting on the lift and keeping up. He was not fun to be around. We got separated a lot from the rest of the group and held up the stronger skiers.
We called it quits after a couple of hours. It would have been a lot harder if we had come from across the country and were determined to make the most of every single minute.
A tip for all you Snowmamas: Offering candy treats from my pocket and the promise of a yummy hot chocolate afterward really helped. I earned a very nice adult beverage this evening.
Maybe we will try again tomorrow!

Skiing with a 5-6 year old has both ranges of emotions! SO happy & proud they're doing it one minute & the cursing and frustration the next! We usually do a few runs, hit the hot chocolate, then hit the mountain again. I love your photo Jen! That sums it up perfectly. Declan saying "NOT moving." I follow your Blog faithfully & you are a very funny writer!
