Ski Memories - Lift Pass for $3.50!!

My Utah roots go back three generations when my great grandparents immigrated in the late 1800’s from England, Wales and Norway (that must be where my love of snow came from).

I was lucky enough to be born to fun, outdoor loving parents that started skiing in the 1930’s before there was even a chairlift in Utah. I loved to hear my dad tell of hiking up Alta mountain to make a ski run; yes that was ONE ski run.  It was 1938 when Alta put in the first single chair lift (the second in the nation).

Park City opened as a ski resort, first called Treasure Mountain, in 1963. I made my début there in 1966 as a nine year old. I remember a Day Pass costing about $3.50!! It was so exciting to ride the longest running Gondola in the world. My dad dropped me off for the day with my brothers and sister, I am sure my skis and boots dated back to the 40’s – wood skis, sling bindings and square toed brown leather boots – handed down through all four of my siblings to me. I would go straight down the hill a hundred miles an hour and would sit down and slide down the really steep hills. I started “official” ski lessons the next year at my brothers’ request.

Skiing memories are so fun and it has been such a joy to watch my own kids learn to love the outdoors, skiing together and with their grandma on occasion, and now me being able to ski with my grandkids. My mom still wishes she could ski at 91, but blames us for taking away her skis.

Here’s what my grandkids have to say about skiing with their Nana . . .

Emma- age 11 – Skiing with Nana is so much fun! One of my favorite things is when we get one-on-one time with Nana on the lift and she teaches us funny songs and we laugh and tell jokes. I also love stopping for lunch and eating at the lodge.

Brock – age 8 – Ski days with Nana are the BEST! Nana finds all the fun runs!! She takes us through the trees and off cool jumps. I love it when we can all ski together.

Kayla – age 5 – I’m big enough to go skiing for my first time this year and I have been practicing. I’m excited to join in with Nana and be a big kid this year!

It all boils down to the memories. My non-skiing husband Danny has agreed to give the StartNOW Program a try this year.  It’s never too late and he has the family cheering.  Watch for a future blog post on how that turns out.
