The Mom Who Didn't Love Summer...and How Park City Changed Her Mind
I'm in the minority, I know. People everywhere adore summer and wait for it to come all year. I wasn't one of them, although it's not for the reason you might think.
I don't dread having all my kids home and trying to find two months worth of things to do. The reality is, we run around like crazy all year with school activities, so I love having days where we don't need to be anywhere.
Honestly, I just love winter and all that goes with it....snow, cold weather, and turtlenecks. On the other hand, summer is hot and humid, and I hate being hot. Not to mention the sunburn factor. There is no "tan" in our family; just white, pink or lobster red. There really is never enough sunscreen for my brood.
We had been visiting Park City for 15 years in winter and heard over and over again from locals on the chairlift that summers were even better. Why not give it a try, we thought. I was sure that this ski town must be dead in the summer...sort of like a New England beach town in winter. How wrong I was.
Park City is both alive and amazing in summer. The weather is absolutely perfect. Not humid, never too hot, with cool nights. Outdoor dining is abundant; my favorite winter spots open up their windows and add patio seating with beautiful flowers. There are concerts, markets and events all over town.
The list of things to do is endless. Hiking, biking, river rafting, fishing, and golfing, to name a few. The best part for me? The temperature was always just right, so you could do all of these at most times of the day.
The family favorite? Without question all the Summer Adventures at Park City Mountain Resort. The mountain transforms into an alpine amusement park, with alpine slides, an Alpine Coaster, zip lines, mini golf, and so much more. You can ride the chairlift to hike, or bring your bike up to hit a single track trail. There is something for everyone of any age in the family, so it's a perfect place to spend the day. If you plan to be there for more than a week or more, it would be worthwhile to purchase the Summer Pass to be able to come and go. Once you spend the day I guarantee your kids will want to go back.
Despite all the amazing things to do, it still doesn't seem to be a destination for those far away, which keeps the lodging rates low. I guess vacationers are busy sweating at the beach or fighting the lines at a theme park. We still need our bucket of sunscreen in Park City. But we've discovered something wonderful, and I'm a convert. Bring on summer, because I'm heading to Park City!

Summers are so underrated in PC, there is so much to do. Heading to the Farmer's Market as I write! Come visit, you see why people come for the winters and stay because of the summers!
