I grew up experiencing first-hand what a little sugar throughout your ski day can do to help maintain your energy and attitude. My ski instructor would divvy out Jolly Ranchers to us at the base after each ride. We loved it. And we needed it. Sometimes we would also take a break midway through the day and enjoy a wooden-stick lollipop. Giving us treats were little gestures that made a big difference to a beginner. It was a fun custom that went a long way in ensuring everyone enjoyed their day on the slopes, bonded during down times and made great memories.
I have carried on this tradition with my own children. A little something sweet while waiting in a long lift line or sitting on the lift chair can cheer up anyone. Over the years we have learned that some treats are better than others on the slopes. Something hearty, such as a protein bar or candy bar, is great for high-exertion days. Carbs also help keep body temperature levels up.
Unique or unusual treats that I will not splurge on in a typical day are especially fun to open on the slopes. Treats that have packaging that allows them to be opened and closed multiple times are best, such as those with plastic lids. Pocket-size is another big advantage.
We love the Juicy Drop Pop, which can be attached to a coat to make it easily accessible. It is candy that squirts drops and is a lollipop, which is especially cool, and it comes in several flavors.
WarHeads Super Sour Spray Candy is GREAT if you like sour. It sprays easily, lasts all day, and is available in several mouth-twisting flavors.
Push Pops come in two sizes, are big on flavor, and come with a convenient push-up top.
Flash Pops and Laser Pops remind me of lightsabers so they are a toy and candy all rolled into one. You can’t beat that!
A sweet attitude and loads of energy are essential to having fun on the slopes. Stuffing treats into my kids’ ski jackets are the best insurance I can buy. But we do not skimp on eating a good lunch in the afternoon. Kids can burn upwards of 200 calories an hour while snowboarding. Keep this is mind when you plan your next ski day. A fueled family is a happy family. And skiing is all about having fun!
