This winter, after cheering on your favorite athletes in Beijing, you can experience the excitement of world class terrain and visit some of the sites and slopes from the 2002 Salt Lake Games in Park City!
Park City’s Olympic heritage starts long before the 2002 games, in 1985, Craig Badami – the namesake for CB’s Run, brought World Cup Skiing to Park City Mountain. America’s Opening took place in March of 1985 with Erika Hess of Switzerland winning gold in the Women’s Slalom and Marc Giradelli of Luxembourg winning the Men’s Slalom.
Ride up Crescent Lift from the base of Park City Mountain and look to your right where you’ll see Willy’s Run, named for Willy Schaeffler, the Director of the U.S. Ski Team in the early 1970s. This black diamond is the run where the World Cup races at Park City were held in the 1980s. Just before Willy’s run is Erika’s Gold, named for Erika Hess and her World Cup win at Park City!
2002 Salt Lake Games
When Salt Lake City won the bid for the 2002 Olympics, Park City was an ideal location for events in part due to his long history of hosting World Cup Events and being the home of the U.S. Ski Team. Park City Mountain hosted the Men’s and Women’s Half Pipe, Parallel Giant Slalom and Men’s and Women’s Slalom events during the games.
Half-Pipe
Located just off 3 Kings Lift, Park City Mountain’s Half-Pipe was the site of the Olympic Half Pipe event in 2002. This was the first appearance of a 22-foot half-pipe in the Olympics. In front of a packed stadium, Americans Ross Powers, Danny Kass, and Jarret Thomas made Olympic history when they swept the Men’s event and American Kelly Clark won Gold in the Women’s Event.
Men’s Giant Slalom
Head up Eagle Lift to take a run down CB’s Run. This run was where Bode Miller won Silver in the Giant Slalom in 2002 and is still used for competitions today such as the Annual Huntsman Cup World Para Alpine Ski Races, and collegiate races including the 2022 NCAA Ski Championships.
Parallel Giant Slalom
Accessible from either Crescent Lift or King Con – you can test your turns on the Men’s Slalom and Ladies’ Slalom runs used for the Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom races in 2002 where American Chris Klug won bronze.
The runs from the 2002 Salt Lake Games are for advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders, but there are plenty of additional fun trails across Park City Mountain for everyone to enjoy and put their skills to the test.
